Most websites that internet users visit possess the qualities of what New Media has been represented as in our class readings and lectures. Based on the various interpretations of New Media presented by Bucy, a various number of websites can be used as examples. In Bucy’s Living in the Information Age, the theory of Rushkoff is presented. A website that portrays, for example, Rushkoff’s theory on New Media is that of a fan site. I revisited the internet forum that I participated in last semester to get some ideas on how media is being portrayed. I began to note the clear signs of Rushkoff’s theory as I looked through the fan site. Rushkoff believes the new turn that media has been taking in recent years is not a result of a “revolution,” as it was proposed by Beniger. Rushkoff does not believe that the new form of media is a new shift from the old forms that occurred abruptly and “violently.” The term revolution moves more towards an idea of one form being completely overturned and replaced by a new form. Though media can be viewed in these regards, I feel Rushkoff’s idea that new media is the result of a Renaissance, not a revolution, is much more accurate. Rushkoff’s Renaissance meant that the shift from old form to new forms was never really a shift, but more like a convergence of the two. There was a rebirth of ideas from the past being revealed in the present. Rather than ideas being suppressed and overthrown, as would be in a revolution, the expression of new ideas is being promoted. The fan site I joined was for the show One Tree Hill. In this fan site I noticed that many ideas were being expressed from people from various countries around the world and states from the U.S. There was a convergence of the old and the new because the main idea of the forum is one that is quite basic and has been the main goal of most web pages for years. The website was trying to present ideas being expressed through one medium (the television) and projected through another (the internet). The old use of a website is that of presenting ideas and summaries of certain subjects to the world. This basic idea was portrayed in the fan site, but a new feature was also implemented. People had the capacity to respond to these summaries and ideas that were already being presented and give their own input on the matter being presented. This new feature merged with the old feature of the website and presents us with a form of new media. The fan site also represents new media through the idea of expression as opposed to suppression. People who visit the website are encouraged to present their own views on the subject and often heated discussion is promoted. The interaction of different users on the internet allows for the free expression of the users on the webpage. This is a sign of the Renaissance theory of Rushkoff. He believed that suppression was not a key of the new age of media, but the new value given to other peoples’ expression was the key. The rebirths and the merging of old forms of media with the new form of media are a result of the new technological changes being experienced by our current society. These technological changes were often viewed as stubbing the old forms, but in reality, it is just pushing our society to new lengths and new ideas that are rooted in the old forms of media. The One Tree Hill fan site clearly represents that technological change is propelling our society in new directions. Due to the changes in technology, the feature of putting forth your own comments and responses to the subject matter are readily available. These changes make new media move in the direction of advancing our society through expressionistic style. There is a constant change in the peoples’ images of the world. As a result of the new technological changes facilitating the formation of new media, people are more open and willing to hear other people express their views.
